The 1866 Indian Head Cent in AU58 Brown (BN) condition, graded by NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation), has its own unique characteristics and appeal within the numismatic community:

  • Design: As with the 1863 version, this cent features the iconic image of Lady Liberty wearing a Native American headdress, designed by James B. Longacre. The reverse features an oak wreath, which was a common motif on U.S. coins during that era, symbolizing strength and longevity.
  • Condition (AU58 BN):
    • AU58 (Almost Uncirculated): This grade indicates the coin has seen very little circulation, with only minor evidence of wear, mainly on the high points like Liberty's cheek, hair, and the wreath on the reverse. The coin retains much of its mint luster in protected areas.
    • BN (Brown): This designation means the coin has a brown patina, which is common for copper coins due to natural oxidation over time. Unlike red or red-brown cents, a brown coin might not have the same premium in value due to toning, but it's still valued for its grade and historical significance.
  • Rarity: While not the rarest date in the Indian Head series, finding an 1866 in such high condition as AU58 is considered desirable. The series as a whole does have some common dates, but high-grade specimens from any year attract collectors due to their scarcity in such condition.
