The 1861-S Seated Liberty Dime in VF30 condition, graded by NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation), is a coin that holds both historical and numismatic significance:

  • Design: This dime features the Seated Liberty design by Christian Gobrecht, which was used from 1837 to 1891. The obverse shows Lady Liberty seated on a rock, with the word "LIBERTY" above, the date below, and thirteen stars encircling. The reverse depicts an eagle with a shield, an olive branch in one talon, and arrows in the other, surrounded by "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DIME."
  • Condition (VF30):
    • VF30 (Very Fine): At this grade, the coin has experienced circulation but retains much of its detail:
      • Wear will be noticeable on the high points like Liberty's head, her arm, and the eagle's breast, but major features remain distinct.
      • Hair strands on Liberty and feather details on the eagle will be visible but worn down.
      • There will be no mint luster due to circulation use, but the coin should present an even wear pattern.
  • Rarity: The 1861-S Seated Liberty Dime, while not among the rarest in the series, is considered a better date due to its relatively lower mintage at the San Francisco Mint, especially in comparison to Philadelphia Mint issues. This makes it a much rarer issue.
