The 1860-S Seated Liberty Dime in AU53 condition, graded by NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation), with great toning, represents a remarkable find in the numismatic community:

  • Design: This dime features the Seated Liberty design by Christian Gobrecht, in use from 1837 to 1891. It portrays Lady Liberty seated on a rock, with "LIBERTY" inscribed above, the date below, surrounded by thirteen stars. The reverse displays an eagle with a shield, olive branch, and arrows, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DIME" encircling.
  • Condition (AU53):
    • AU53 (Almost Uncirculated): This grade indicates the coin has seen minimal circulation:
      • Only the slightest wear on the highest points like Liberty's cheek, hair, and the eagle's breast.
      • Most of the coin will retain its original mint luster, with only minor contact marks or slight impairments.
      • At AU53, the coin is very close to being uncirculated, making it highly desirable.
  • Toning:
      • Toning refers to the natural oxidation color that develops on coins over time, often creating beautiful rainbow-like colors or appealing patinas.
  • Rarity:
    • The 1860-S Seated Liberty Dime, while not one of the rarest in the series, finding one in AU53 with great toning is exceptional. The San Francisco Mint produced relatively fewer coins compared to Philadelphia, adding to its scarcity, especially in high grades.
