The 1853 Seated Liberty Dime in VF25 condition, graded by NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation), and specifically without arrows at the date, carries its own unique story within numismatics:

  • Design: This dime features the Seated Liberty design by Christian Gobrecht, used from 1837 to 1891. It shows Lady Liberty seated on a rock, surrounded by thirteen stars, with the word "LIBERTY" above and the date below. The reverse depicts an eagle with a shield on its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows, encircled by "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DIME."
  • Condition (VF25):
    • VF25 (Very Fine): At this grade, the coin has experienced circulation but still retains much of its detail:
      • Moderate wear on the high points like Liberty's head, her arm, and the eagle's breast, but major features are still clear.
      • Hair strands and feathers are visible but worn down.
      • There's no mint luster due to circulation, and the coin might show some scratches or nicks from handling.
  • Historical Context (No Arrows):
    • No Arrows: In 1853, due to the passage of the Act of February 21, 1853, the weight of the dime was reduced from 2.67 grams to 2.49 grams to curb the practice of melting down coins for their silver content. Coins minted after this act had arrows added at the date to signify the weight reduction. Thus, the 1853 No Arrows dime represents the last of the heavier weight dimes before this change.
  • Rarity: While not considered as rare as some other dates in the Seated Liberty dime series, the 1853 No Arrows in VF25 is still collectible and somewhat scarce due to the historical transition it represents. The transition year coins often attract attention for their numismatic significance.
