Jefferson Nickels 1938-Date

The Jefferson Nickel was introduced in 1939 to replace the long running Buffalo Nickel. Felix Schlag who had entered a contest with 390 artists to compete for the winning design produced the Jefferson design. As a prize Felix was awarded $1,000.00.  The Jefferson Nickels were produced in 35% Silver during the war years due to the face that the materials were needed for the war effort.
